Dear Asrockers,

this is my first topic here, hope you will have some consideration with me....
I was looking for some good mem-modules for my son's K7 Upgrade. I bought some Kingston 256MB 400Mhz modules, but...after installing it the PC only beeps..
1 long and two short beeps.
Sounds really nice ... but alas, that's all there is.. Trying to figure out what is could be (overlooking jumpers again and again, FSB, AGP etc, etc, we concluded that either the CPU is bad (Athlon XP 2400+ - but its brand-new, so..) or the mem modules arent that good, as the beautiful picture suggested.
Anybody out there who has some experiences like we have with this mobo and any suggestions about mem?
we would be very, very relieved.. and offer you lots of thanks when you come with a solution that works.

I assume you have set the FSB pins. On my Upgrade880, it was very sensative to the FSB pins on the motherboard.

You have a 266FSB CPU, so set the pins as follows:
FSB_SEL0 - No connections
FSB_SEL1 - 2-3
FSB_SEL2 - 1-2

If these pins are not properly set, the memory can run at all kinds of weird speeds.

Let me know if those are properly set, and if they were not, if you get any better results.

Well, check the FSB pins anyways, but i might have found something more helpful.

If that board has AMI or Award BIOS, 1 long + 2 short is a Video failure.

Do you have another Video card to try in that machine? And by chance, what video card are you using?

Hi Luke, Welcome to the Haven, glad you found us!

NPlack is spot on, that is video problems, I would suspect the card is not seated correctly (very common problem), so take it out, and then re-seat it and try again.

Good luck,and post back [ThumbsUp]

mario had a good suggestion, reset the BIOS. I always do this on every board i receive. Whether it be new, used, or even some of my old stock.

Having fresh BIOS makes troubleshooting so much easier, since you are starting from a clean slate.

Unseated video cards are a very common problem. Dont be afraid to push hard on those suckers. They need to be FULLY seated to function properly. They are not like PCI cards that only need to be partially seated. AGP cards have two layers of pins, making it crucial to haveing a fully seated card.

Oke Guys

that's really fast help! well: lets see,

Nplack:
it's the one with the AMI bios - so first beep is correct posting en the two short beeps signifie parity error - or am i wrong about that?
(www tells me there's a difference between AMI/AWARD beep codes - or not?

Mario: what do you suggest by
res(t)art bios? do you suggest: reset? - is done -
johnmalc:
video card is a Radeon 9200 se 128MB (with the right voltage 1,5 or so - also: NO 3,3 V.
I'll tell my son to check if the card is seated properly - you never know....

BUT: non of you reflects on the supposed mem-problem? Am i totally wrong about that
what brand of MEM dou you have?

thanks for now

Luke

1long+2short is video error on both AMI and Award.

9200se is just fine. I bet it is just a seating problem.

Memory shouldnt be a problem as far as compatability, but there is always the chance that it is DOA. I ran GeiL, AData, Corsair, generic all in my Upgrade880 without fail.

Either way, the BIOS beep is a video error.

Hi Luke

All beep codes are a sequence, so don't read the first beep as the "okay", 'cos it isn't.
I would say 50% of the vid cards I sell get me a phonecall saying "it just beeps", and I give them Plack's advice, PUSH! Never had one back yet [Wink]

Go for it [Big Grin]

to everybody who responded so far..

Well, despite all your good advices we cannot get the asrock K7 Upgrade-600 running. We double, triple -cheched al the pins and settings, so that can't be the cause. CPU maybe? But it is strange that another CPU *Athlon 1200* functions very well in another (MSI) mobo but not in this one.

I'll take it back to the shop where i bought it,
and try to get an new one..
Or maybe it's better to ask for another type?
in my own PC i have a K7SXE and it's working really fine.
I also don't see much reactions on the K7Ugrade-600...
maybe that's a sort of warning not to buy this mobo? Or am i seeing ghosts

anyway, you will hear from us, see how this story ends..
from Holland with thanks
Luke and Harm
