About three months ago my 3.5 years old Samsung Syncmaster 226BW started to flicker when turned on and keep getting worse until I had to leave it on 24/7 because if I didn't it would take 8+ minutes before it was fully operating, if it would ever light up again.
So I did some googling and found out that it happens quite a bit with this monitor after they get 3 years old. What is happening is that there are some capacitors going bad on the power supply board. Here's a pic of mine.
So all I have to do is get some new caps and install them
Had a heck of a time finding some caps that would work. Got some Panasonic ones off ebay that should do the trick though the 820uf ones, the taller two of the three, are 5mm taller than those getting replaced.

1) If it ain't broke, don't fix it! But maybe they will all die. Who knows....
2) Mixing cap brands is not a problem what so-ever..
When getting a replacement, get same or higher voltage, but capacity should be within say maybe 30 to 40% of old value. S/B on the high side that is...

I got the last of the caps in yesterday and got them installed last night.
Sorry about my poor soldering
And here it's working like it should as I'm installing Win7 on a friends PC.
The only thing I ran into was with the 820uf caps. The originalcaps where 20mm tall, while the replacement caps are 25mm tall so there ended up just enough room (snug) for them to fit.
Now I have a spare monitor. I got a 24" ASUS from the egg while this one was down.
Now to check with the IT guy at work. I saw that they had several LCD monitors in the junk monitor pile. I might be able to repair some of them or I might inherit more junk

I been buying 17" Samsungs off of e-bay used and new. $18 was cheapest used and $110 brand new in the box highest price. I realize no one wants 17" any more, but there are larger too..

I was able to get 6 LCD monitors from work that are "broke"
4 of the 6 have bad caps on the power supply board. One of the other two I'm going to replace the caps but it maybe another problem with it. The last monitor is an old, almost 9 years, LCD that I'm not going to mess with, the caps look good on it.
And thanks for the link to Digi-Key Polygon. I just received my first order from them. They are good and fast

I now have 5 Christmas presents for family members this year. Two 19" Viewsonic's, two 19" Optiquest's and one 17" Optiquest which are Veiwsonics' anyways.
So it pays to help out at work by getting rid of those old LCD monitors that don't work anymore so the company doesn't have too.
I'm testing them now by running the screen saver on them for a couple of hours. So far 2 for 2!
