Here's a Vcore Mod for the GA-K8NF-9......

While the BIOS adjusts to 1.75Vcore, the voltage is closer to 1.71V. The intent of this modification is to increase the Vcore by 0.1V....

You are doing this modification at your own risk and while it will void your warrantee, it may permanently damage your board and/or your CPU...

NOTE: This Vcore Mod is for GA-K8N-9 nForce 4X board only. The power supply circuit may be different on the SLI boards....

If you do this mod, your doing it at your own risk. The Rebels Haven Computer Forum will not be responsible for damaged systems or components... If your unsure about the mods, I strongly suggest you do not implement them...

OK, here is the circuit we're talking about. It's stragically placed next to the CPU in order to distribute the Vcore amperage with as little loss as possible. The lead of the Inductor is a convient place to measure Vcore. The negative lead of your DMM can be connected to any ground, or the I/O plate.

The GA-K8NF-9 uses a 3 phase step-down switching regulator for maximum efficiency. The PWM chip is a Intersil ISL6559 It's a 28 pin IC and has the referance designation of "U6", but has "U8" directly below it:

 -

The Switching Regulator circuit is a typical, but state-of-the-art, Synchronous Rectifier, 3 phase circuit.

Here's a photo showing where the resistor must connect to.... Pin 1 is by the "dot" in the lower left-hand corner. The pins are numbered counterclockwise. The IC is quite small and will take a precision solder job to not muck up the IC or the board...

The resistor gets connected from pin 10 to pin 20 or any nearby ground.

A quick test shows that the Vcore circuit is exactly as I thought it was.

Connecting a resistor from U6 pin 10 to pin 20 or any ground, increases the Vcore voltage....

Initial measurements show the the Vcore is about .04 below the BIOS set levels...

Here's the resistors to use and what voltage they yield:

A 10K resistor gives a 0.15V increase
A 15K resistor gives a 0.1V increase This is the recommended mod resistor.
A 22K resistor gives a 0.06V increase

Keep in mind that the BIOS can go to 1.75Vcore and the 15K resistor will raise the total to 1.85Vcore which I believe to be too much for any A64 CPU that wants a long life...

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES REDUCE THE RESISTOR ON PIN 10 TO GROUND BELOW 10K OR FAILURE OF THE BOARD AND CPU WILL OCCUR

You are doing these mods at your own risk, while I have tried the 15K, I can not guarantee you will not fry your board....

I don't want to try any Vcore above 1.75V as I'm running a $899US FX-55.... The first one I had I ran at 1.85V and sometimes it wouldn't POST... I RMA'ed it.....

I need lower temps for higher clock speeds... With my present setup, I can run 2.95Gig.. Lowering the temps into the low 20's, allowed me to go to about 3.1Gig..... I'm afraid of condensation at those temps... I can't afford to fry this CPU.... [Big Grin]

I also have a 2Gig Winchester that I can get to the same speed. That needs the 1.75V setting though...

Jus done the vCore mod, except had no resistors...

So I used a pencil and drawed the circuit on until I had the voltage I wanted (settings in BIOS @ 1.3 I penciled it till it was like 1.422), then I super glued cling film ontop so the pencil didn't wear out!! lolz Crazy eh...

Anyway currently set too 1.7v in BIOS in CPU-Z it currently reads as 1.776v, this has meant I have been able to set it too 9 x 289 in the BIOS and acheived my goal 1.6GHz!!! Aquamark III has been passed http://arc.aquamark3.com/arc/arc_view.php?run=688363282

I will never ever try to get more speed now!! lol Perfectly happy as it is now, gonna go play some UT2004 lator and see how the PC lasts, so far no glitches except straight fail in Prime 95 but I'm gonna stop using that.....
